a traditional combat engineer motif. Over the wall on the left side between
the left turret and the gate hangs the head of a bull dog. Below the castle
it says "PANAMA". Under the "PANAMA" with smaller letters in a semi-circle
it says "ENGLAND FRANCE JAPAN VIETNAM".

The legend along the upper edge of the medal says "536TH ENGINEER BATTALION".
Along the lower edge the legend says "324TH SUPPORT GROUP".
The center of the medal has the insignia of the 536th Engineer Battalion.
The insignia is an elongated shield. It has lines in the shape of an
hourglass dividing the shield. On the right and left are what may be ears
of wheat. Inside the hourglass in the lower half is a crossed pick and shovel.
In the top half is another device which I am not sure what it is. It is vaguely
sailboat shaped. Under the shield is a banner with the motto "NATION BUILDERS".
On the left side of the insignia is the legend "UNITED" and to the right
of the insignia is the word "STATES". On a second line, on the left the medal says
"ARMY" and on the right it says "SOUTH".
Below the insignia is a raised rectangle where the name of the recipient
could be engraved.
The coin has a smooth plain raised edge,
and a plain and smooth background.

Historical Note
|
Searching the web, I have not been able to find much about any of the units
listed on this challenge coin. I have found some minimal references to
the 536th Engineer Battalion. This battalion participated
in Operation Just Cause, but consisted of three detachments. I have not
found any references to the 15th Engineer Company Combat Support Equipment at
all.
The 536th Engineer Battalion also participated in Operation Promote Liberty,
to rebuild Panama after the war and included engineering
assistance projects. Exercise Fuertes Caminos-Panama '90 (Spanish for "strong roads")
completed 75 projects including refurbishing 46 schools, three hospitals,
14 bridges and 500 kilimeters of roads, etc. between April and June 1990.
Exercise Cosecha Amistad '90 (Spanish for "Harvest Friendship") completed another
44 projects including 19 schools, seven health clinics, 13 wells, 23 kilometers
of roads, etc. between July and December 1990. The 536th Engineer Battalion was
an important part of both these exercises. The 536th Engineer Battalion was based out of Panama at least from
1989 to 1993, and probably longer.
Please
e-mail me if you can add anything to the history of this challenge coin.
