Lot #8

VN-2.285 (Brown and Vernon, "BY THE COURAGE AND CONDUCT" /in exergue, Reverse striated),
McCormick-Goodhart #145, Betts # 268.

A Fine (F-12) example in copper. Moderate but even wear. Entire design is bold but the high points have been worn smooth. The deep recessed areas retain their detail. About 50% of all the fine detail is present. The faces are worn on the obverse but the coats retain lots of detail. On the reverse, the buildings and ships are present, but have lost a lot of detail, especially at the top of the metal. At the bottom of the metal, most guns can still be seen. VN-2.285 is a relatively common variety. Size: 37½ mm. Weight: 14.6 grams. Estimate: $45 to $75.
