Obverse Design

Legend curving above says "« OF « ADMIRAL « VERNON « AND «
COMMODORE « BROWN »". There is no inside
line enclosing the legend. Hip length (1/2 length) figure of Brown is on our
left and Vernon on our right. Brown is profile right. Vernon is 1/2 left,
looking almost fully forward. Both are holding batons.
Brown's head is beneath the "NO" of "VERNON", and his elbow is by the stop
between "OF" and "ADMIRAL". Vernon's head
is beneath the "OMM" of "COMMODORE", and his elbow by the "N" in "BROWN".
In exergue (under a line along the bottom of the medal) it says
". BY . THE . COURAGE ."
and ". AND . CONDUCT" in two lines.
The medal has a beaded edge.

In exergue (under a line along the bottom of the medal) it says
"I. W. FECIT".
The center is the attack on Portobello.
The six ships are lined up one, two and three, the three upper ships being at the
extreme right. The three ships closest to the right edge are sailing left, and
the other three are sailing right.
There are five boats are in the harbor and a sixth outside the harbor with a flag.
A towers point at the "I" of "WITH" and a steeple points to the stop after the
letter "X".
There are water lines in the harbor.
The edge of the medal is beaded.

Distinctions
|
There are about 31 similar varieties with Brown and Vernon. Of those, about 27
involve 1/2 length Brown and Vernon's facing each other holding batons.
However, only two have "BY THE COURAGE AND CONDUCT" in exergue on the obverse.
This one appears to have a smooth background on both sides, although described
by McCormick-Goodhart as reverse "striated". The other variety is described
as being identical but with the background on both sides stippled.
